Travel in Germany Rothenburg The town of Rothenburg is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Germany, and once there, you'll see why. Once upon a time, many cities in Germany that appeared: picturesque timbered houses, cobbled streets, all surrounded by a wall with many towers. Unfortunately, most of the city tore its medieval fortifications in the 19th century, the road to progress and traffic. Rothenburg is not, however. The former "Free Imperial City", the time seems to stand still. Rothenburg is located in southe Germany, about 110 miles southeast of Frankfurt. The old town is situated on a hill overlooking the Tauber River, and is very compact. You can explore the entire city in half a day, but it is best to bring comfortable shoes, as the cobblestones and steep steps leading to the battlements can be difficult to navigate, especially when it rains. Rothenburg has become a "Free Imperial City" in the 13th century and became an important regional trade center. During the Thirty Years War (1618-48), who escaped being fired by enemy troops, the former mayor Nusco accepted a challenge from the enemy and shot down nearly a gallon of wine in one shot, an event that is still being re-enacted during a festival each spring. One could say that all of Rothenburg is a time capsule, with many historic buildings in every coer, but some buildings are highlighted. There is the impressive City Hall, the church of San Giacomo, with its famous altar carved by Riemenschneider and the Museum of the crime, that the old documents (and often brutal) forms of punishment. If you travel in southe Germany, Rothenburg is an ideal destination for a day trip. Do not forget to try the cuisine and fine wines of Franconia. A specialty is the local dessert "snow" made of strips of fried dough sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon. Summer is the tourist season, and can get very crowded Rothenburg then, it would be a good idea to go in spring or autumn, although the weather may be cold and rainy. You will not regret your trip to Rothenburg.
